FAQs

What exactly is Pilates?

Pilates is a workout system of more than 500 controlled exercises that engage both the mind and body. It is a combination of strength and flexibility training that creates long, lean muscles without bulking up, improves your posture and flexibility and enhances mental focus and sense of serenity. The motion is smooth and continuous, with a special focus on the body's core or the "powerhouse" - the abdomen, back and pelvic girdle.

Pilates takes a balanced approach so no one body part is overworked, and because the movements aren't rigorous, one feels invigorated rather than drained after a session. Pilates is also the perfect complement to a regimen that includes a sport activity. Exercises can be done on the mat or with specialised equipment.

How often should I do Pilates?

2 to 4 times a week is ideal, with a day off in between sessions. You can complement your Pilates work out with cardiovascular activity on your days off like walking, cycling or running. A consistent routine will integrate well with the Pilates principles you will learn. After 10 to 15 sessions, you'll start seeing results in your flexibility and physique.

What age group is Pilates for?

Pilates benefits everyone of any age, fitness level or body type and condition. The program can be adapted and customised to fit your individual needs. Age is less relevant than fitness condition. Someone older may NOT necessarily have a more limited range of movement - sometimes a 64 year old can do better contortions than a 30 year old who might struggle with a simple pilates pose.
